Aliano
Immersed in the surreal and arid landscape of the Lucanian badlands, Aliano is a picturesque village whose name is inextricably linked to twentieth-century literature. It is here, among the fascinating clay hills that look like lunar landscapes, that Carlo Levi spent his political confinement between 1935 and 1936, and drew inspiration for his literary masterpiece “Christ Stopped at Eboli”.
With its cobbled streets and ancient mud brick houses clinging to the cliffs, Aliano seems to have stopped time in an eternal embrace. Walking through the village it is possible to visit the house where the Turin writer lived and walk through the Literary Park dedicated to him. “Christ Stopped at Eboli” painted the life of Aliano in the 1930s in a raw and real way, giving voice to the silences and difficulties of a deeply isolated peasant community, but full of dignity.
Aliano is also famous for its very particular Carnival, characterized by the “Horned Masks”, frightening and evocative handcrafted papier-mâché costumes that have their roots in ancient apotropaic rites.
Visiting Aliano is not just tourism, but an intimate journey into the depths of the Lucanian soul. It is an experience that combines the rugged beauty of nature with the profound richness of history, continuing to inspire anyone who decides to travel its streets and be enchanted by its timeless charm.
